1st Day of School Tips

It’s time for another Linky Party and this one is all about the 1st day of school.  This will be my 12th year of teaching and I still get soooo nervous before school starts.  No matter how prepared I am, I know I will toss and turn all night and get no sleep.  So, for the new teachers reading this, you are not alone!  The only thing you can do is get everything organized and prepped as best as possible and hope for the best.  Hopefully, these tips will help you out this year.

 You can download a copy of these by clicking on the first picture above.
I also recommend that you make your lessons very detailed for the first couple days of school.  I have included my first two days of lessons below.

“The First Day of School” book from Day 1 can be found in my Teachers Pay Teachers store.  The download includes a full page version and a half page version.  {If you have purchased this in the past, I updated it with some revised fonts and pictures if you want to go and redownload it.}

The first day of school can be nerve racking, but it is also such an exciting time.  The most important thing to remember is to teach procedures for EVERYTHING! {Do not expect them to know how to do something.}
If you have tips for the first day of school, grab the button below and link up.

  1. The best thing I ever did with my first and second graders was to set up "permanent line order". I line them up by height, girl/boy, and it stays that way all year. I only switch someone if a problem arises. No more arguing over who's first, who's last–nothing! I can see the whole line because the shortest two kids are first. With 33 kids, teaching these procedures is so important! Thanks for the reminders! (After 30 years of teaching, I'm still learning!!)

  2. I love this list of procedures. I am printing it right now. I plan on making a copy for my student teacher. This is great to have the list right in front of me so I don't forget anything.

    I have been teaching for seven years and I also toss and turn the night before the first day worrying about if everything is ready even though I know it is. 🙂

  3. I'm exhausted just reading through your list of procedure reminders! Even though this is my 8th year, it doesn't make the beginning of the year any easier! Although I love my job, it is so hard to start over again every year!

  4. I love this list–as I read it, I mentally checked off that I do 90% of those things–but I've never had it as a list before! Then I can actually check it off!

  5. I have never had a problem printing anything, however, when I print your wonderful LIST it's only in black lines….Anyone else having problems?

  6. Love this! Thank you! One question, with reading The Gingerbread Man, do you use a specific book and what do you have them look for while walking around the school?

  7. I just graduated in May of 2015 and am starting my FIRST teaching job in less than a week (I just found out I got the position)…thank you so much for all of this. I am so nervous, excited, and scared! Ah! I found this very helpful.
