Daily Comprehension Notebook

I am so thrilled to have this project finished.  I originally started this Comprehension Notebook this summer, but never got too far with it.  I finally tackled it and I couldn’t be happier with the final product.
This comprehension notebook includes 30 weeks of comprehension practice.  Each week includes an original fiction or nonfiction text that is meant to be read to the students or have them read it, depending on their reading level.  Then each day of the week has some type of comprehension strategy practice.

This unit is aligned to the Common Core Standards, but even if you don’t use the CCS, this is still perfect for any 1st grade classroom because it hits on so many different comprehension skills.
I recommend printing it 2 sided and either putting it in a 3 ring binder or spiral binding it.

This particular notebook is geared towards 1st graders, but it would work well for high Kindergarteners or lower 2nd graders.  I will also be working on other grade level editions as well, but give me a couple of weeks 😉

  1. I love this. I was wondering when in your particular schedule you are using this. I was also thinking this would make great homework for each week. I love it and would also be interested in the second grade edition.

  2. I LOVE THIS!!!!! But have no idea exactly how to fit it into my schedule that is already way too full 🙁 Any suggestions on how to best use it? Whole group? Small group?

  3. EJ…I use it in a whole group, but I'm pretty sure I'm switching to small group during guided reading time. It really only takes about 10 minutes each day, if that.

  4. I only have 15 min/group each day, so 10 minutes would be WAY too much in small group! But I really want to figure out how to make it work, so I'm going to think about how I could make it work in whole group, at least a few days a week, and then maybe in small group for my higher groups on the other days? So everyone would get the exposure maybe 2-3 days a week, and then other students would get it everyday? Hmmmmm, gotta think some more about this one. But seriously, I love it!
