Fluency, Comprehension, and Vocabulary

I work in a high poverty school and the majority of our students come to us with little prior knowledge.  We struggle every year trying to enhance their vocabulary.  In first grade, we really try to put a huge emphasis on phonics, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary development.  I have created a weeklong packet to use as a supplement to my language arts curriculum.  Each day has some type of fluency passage with “Power Words” (just a fancy name for vocabulary words), comprehension questions, a parent check off, and some type of other language arts activity.  I can think of numerous ways to use this weekly packet, but I am planning on using it as a supplement to my daily reading interventions.  It could even be used as a weekly homework packet as long as you had good parent support.  My hope is to create one each week.  Let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions on making it more teacher and student friendly.  Thanks.

  2. What reading series do you use that you are supplementing for? Our last story was about birds in the Treasures series, is why I ask. This packet is wonderful!

  3. We use Treasures so that is one of the reasons that birds were on my mind. 🙂 I also LOVED this clipart I found, so I went with the "bird" theme for this week.

  4. Thanks so much! This will be perfect for my students! However I am having a hard time with downloading, downloaded original and tried view as a PDF but still get gray/black bars in the download and most of the print is gone. Can I email you and maybe you can email me the doc? Let me know 🙂

  5. This is great! One of K students reads at a end of first/beginning of second grade level. This would be much better for her than our K homework! Thanks for sharing!

Do you plan to keep sharing them as you make them each week?

  7. Jodi,
My team loves your fluency, comprehension papers that you use. Tell me do you go over the power words all week and read the passage orally to the kids.

Also you have the cutest blog and great ideas. Thanks for sharing

  8. @Tricia,
I use a new passage each day. I introduce the Power Words. We discuss them and use them in sentences. The I read the passage once and they try to join in the next time. We read it together about 4-5 times. If there is time, I put students with a partner to practice the passage. Hope this helps 🙂
