October Differentiated Reading Comprehension Passages

Honestly, there are not enough words to describe how hard it is to teach students to read. Since everyone picks up decoding, blending, and segmenting at different speeds, every student is at a different place. While differentiation is critical when learning to read, planning and creating resources can become overwhelming. However, it is essential to remember that students feel the same way! They will feel bored or overwhelmed if lessons are not at their level. Teachers never want students to feel this way when learning how amazing it is to be a reader! These passages are the perfect way to save time while differentiating small group reading lessons each week! 

Specifically, each month includes 4 fiction and 4 nonfiction passages. There are 3 differentiated levels, so there are 24 passages. Students will love having reading passages at their level! 

Activities

On top of all the differentiation, each passage includes a lesson plan template, vocabulary cards, and a pre-reading activity. Grade Level

Additionally, the highest level passage will be perfect for advanced first graders or on-level 2nd graders.

Having 4 fiction and 4 nonfiction [passages with 3 differentiated levels means lessons are quick to prepare. Best of all, students will receive materials at the most appropriate level. Students love reading about the same topic at a level that supports their learning. 

If you do like to use small groups, the passages also work well in whole groups or independent work. No matter how you use them, students will love them!

    It is nice to meet you. I use a colour coded traffic light system in order to monitor all pupil progress each term. This is a very quick breakdown. Best wishes. Red means a lot of help is required at once, yellow represents slowly getting there with less help and green is reserved for on track children who are racing ahead. I check student class work each day.

    However I only tend to set, collect, read and mark homework tasks once a week in addition. After I have seen the homework exercise in question I use the traffic light system to mark it. I also write a short comment to encourage them to keep doing homework. Once a term I invite parents into my own office for a private meeting about pupil achievement.
